Dorchester area growing by leaps and bounds

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - An area of North Charleston and Summerville is now growing by leaps and bounds. It's known as Coosaw Pointe. It is in the area of Dorchester County near the corner of Dorchester and Ashley Phosphate roads.

Since the area of Dorchester County has designated itself as Coosaw Pointe, locals have formed a business association and started a farmer's market.

Officials say there are up to 55,000 people living in the area and up to 150 businesses which is a number that keeps growing.

North Charleston councilman Ed Astle says Harris Teeter has invested in property. Several new restaurants are moving in and a new baseball field and recreation center are all slated to be built in the area.

"Ladles has been the first business to go into that business center. Its a soup based restaurant," says Astle. "Guiseppis from what I understand, a pizzeria from Mount Pleasant is coming and there's a Chinese food restaurant going in there."

Additionally, the local business association tells me Boeing has had a significant effect on the area. They say with the plant only five miles away, workers have purchased homes, shopped and banked in Coosaw Pointe.

Because of the growth, two city council members will now represent the area instead of one.
