Summerville council passes first reading of alcohol ordinance

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The Summerville town council voted unanimously Wednesday night to pass the first reading of a proposed ordinance that will allow people to consume beer and wine at public events.

Mayor Bill Collins is proposing to create "special event areas" where people could drink alcoholic beverages during park concerts or at a wedding in a public building. This would be an exemption to the town's law already prohibiting possession of an open container of alcohol in public places.

Collins says the events would be granted one-day permits on a case-by-case basis.

The special events areas law will go to public hearing for a final vote.
