CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A convicted felon was sentenced to 9 years in prison after police found a handgun on the 24-year-old man in Charleston.
United States Attorney Bill Nettles said that Dakota Brown of was sentenced on Thursday in federal court for felon in possession of a firearm.
Evidence presented at the trial established that on April 25, 2010, Brown was in a passenger in a vehicle with several other people when police attempted a traffic stop. When the vehicle stopped, Brown got out of the vehicle with a silver hand gun.
Police Officer Daniel English of the Charleston Police Department immediately recognized Brown from the unique tattoos on his face and prior interactions with him, including a prior arrest of Brown.
While fleeing, Brown dropped a .25 caliber handgun and eluded capture, but was subsequently arrested on April 30, 2010. Brown has prior felony convictions, and is therefore prohibited from possessing firearms.
