Folly Beach councilwoman resigns

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - A Folly Beach councilwoman and mayor pro-tem resigned Monday effective immediately.

Laura Beck, who was first elected to City Council in 2006, resigned her seat Monday because of family reasons. Beck served as the council's mayor pro-tem.

"As my family embarks on a new chapter in our lives, I've had to make the difficult to resign my seat on Folly Beach Town Council," Beck said in a statement Monday. "While serving on Town Council was a tremendous honor, and I truly enjoyed every minute working to protect the taxpayers and keep our area strong for future generations, we also look forward to this new phase as we return to my hometown of Charleston and the opportunities for a fresh start."

During her term, Beck focused on keeping taxes, strong law enforcement, improving traffic flow and working to foster a better relationship between businesses and residents.

"I thank the citizens of Folly Beach for the opportunity to serve the city for the last six years.  I have worked hard to live up to the trust you have placed in me, and hope you feel I have served you well and honorably.  I would also like to thank my many friends and supporters for their assistance over the years," Beck said.
