WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A busy residential and business district of West Ashley may be rezoned. Charleston City council members will take a look at the proposal at their meeting Tuesday night.
Mayor Joe Riley says residents in the Folly Road and Wesley Drive area have asked the city to be part of a Savannah Highway overlay district which would allow them to operate businesses in their current residential properties.
They mayor says the proposed measure would only allow a select few property owners to operate under limited business zoning laws.
"The Ashley Bridge district is one of the oldest residential areas of West Ashley including the neighborhoods of Windermere and Moreland. But over time, more businesses have developed in the area including the Windemere shopping center," Mayor Joe Riley said.
City council is expecting to vote on the rezoning at Tuesday night's meeting at 5 p.m.
