Former North Charleston police chief dies

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner's Office confirmed that former North Charleston Police Chief Mickey Whatley died at the age of 75 on Tuesday.

Authorities say Whatley died of natural causes. Whatley's daughter, Leah, said that her father died Tuesday afternoon sitting on his porch in his Evanston Estates home.

Leah Whatley said that her father loved the city, people and streets he used to patrol.

Mickey Whatley was police chief in the early 1990's. He was also a former state lawmaker and agent for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Whatley leaves behind three sons and a daughter. There is no word on when his funeral will take place.
