JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - More than half a million dollars is going to make changes around the Angel Oak on Johns Island.
Charleston County council approved the request from the City of Charleston Tuesday night. The money will be used to buy six and a half acres surrounding the Grand Oak.
The land is already protected from development. The city plans to move the gift shop and parking lot further away to reduce stress on the tree.
They'll also make room for a picnic shelter and a small museum. Visiting the Angel Oak is free and that won't change after the improvements are made.
