Community honors former North Charleston police chief

Friends and family said goodbye to a former North Charleston police chief. Mickey Whatley was laid to rest Friday afternoon.

He was 75-years-old and died at his home on Tuesday.  The community honored him by lining the streets as a motorcade led the way to his funeral at First Baptist Church.

A 21 gun salute was fired off by military personnel today as well to thank him for his two years of service in the army.

Whatley started in the city as a firefighter. He was part of the original police force in North Charleston and became one of the city's first detectives.

He then served as police chief from 1992 to 1994, and as a State Law Enforcement Division agent from 1984 to 1992.
