South Carolina Aquarium gets new medical facility

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Aquarium cares for all kinds of sea creatures and now it has a new state-of-the-art medical facility to nurse them back to health.

Only a few aquariums in the country have a medical facility to treat and care for animals. And now there's one at the South Carolina aquarium.

They'll have a full scale state of the art medical facility all in one room. The 800 square foot treatment area includes an operating area, pharmacy, radiology room, office for the veterinarian and much more.

"This really takes us into the future, we've always provided expert care for our animals that's really what we do," says SC Aquarium CEO Kevin Mills."So this facility will allow us to provide state of the art care."

Now with the new medical facility, everything will all be in one area with one room and one location. It's a new step forward for the aquarium.

"All the equipment is in one spot. So we can do a surgery whether it takes 15 minutes or two hours," says staff veterinarian Shane Byland. "We don't have to go up and down stairs, we don't have to put equipment back in four different floors, it's all at our fingertips."
