ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) - An Orangeburg County mother has been arrested and charged with child abuse after her 3-year-old child was found to have a broken leg and split liver.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said 23-year-old Shanika Ann Riley was arrested Friday afternoon after hospital officials called the sheriff's office to report Riley's child was a victim of child abuse.
"During our initial investigation, Riley told officers she allowed a woman from Vance to keep her child between August 8 and August 12 and the child had scratches and bruises when she picked the child up from her," said Ravenell. "Riley did not provide specific information about the person who was to have cared for her child for 4 days, nor did she report the abuse to law enforcement without being prompted by family members."
According to investigators, the child suffered a broken leg and a split liver from blunt force trauma while being cared for at a home in Orangeburg. Deputies said the child also had bite marks and bruises. Investigators did not release the name of the caregiver.
The child is receiving additional medical treatment and the Department of Social Services has placed the child in the custody of the grandmother.
Ravenell said the investigation is ongoing.
Riley is being held at the orangeburg Regional Detention Center.
