Cops searching for shooter after victim drives self to hospital

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston police are investigating a shooting in West Ashley after officers say the victim drove himself to the hospital after getting shot Monday afternoon.

"It was crazy. It was scary," said John Cameron.

Cameron is in town visiting his mother at her apartment on Highway 61 in West Ashley. He said it has been anything but a relaxing visit.

"I heard five gunshots," Cameron said.

After hearing those five gunshots, he peaked out the window, but didn't see anything. He said just a few minutes later, though, the area was swarmed with police looking for information.

"I told him it was a semi-automatic. It wasn't an automatic. I could tell," Cameron said.

A spokesperson for the Charleston Police Department said the victim was driving on Highway 61 toward downtown Charleston, near an apartment complex, when a white, newer model Nissan Altima with tinted windows pulled up next to him at a red light.

Police said the passenger in the Altima fired several shots and hitting him. According to police, the victim was able to drive himself to St. Francis Hospital.

Several neighbors at the apartment complex said because it happened in such a busy area, someone must have seen something. They say they'll be worried until the suspects are caught.

"I'm only here for a few days, but the time that I'm here, this has to happen. It scares me to leave her here," Cameron said.
