Driver in fatal James Island Connector accident pays fine

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The driver facing charges for the accident that killed a cyclist on the James Island Connector was scheduled to be in traffic court on Thursday, but his lawyer says he has paid the $113 fine.

Charleston police have charged Gregory Rupley with improper lane usage.

Officers say the van he was driving on July 5 hit 54-year-old Mitchell Hollon who was thrown off the expressway.

Authorities say they found Hollon's body in a marsh below the connector.

According to a traffic report by the Charleston Police Department,  Rupley swerved into the bike lane striking Hollon who then went over the connector and into the marsh below.
