Metal roofs more expensive, but offer good value

If it's time to replace your roof, you've got more choices than ever. Asphalt shingles are the most common, but now more companies are specializing in metal roofing.  Angie's List did some homework on this type of roof, that's growing in popularity.

Metal roofs have been around for a long time, but over the past few years, they have really evolved, and now come in a variety of colors and styles. There are shingles and panels available.

"A metal roof will cost more than an asphalt shingle roof, but if you're planning to live in your home a long time, you're likely to get a good return because a metal roof is going to come with a 50-year warranty" says Angie Hicks of the consumer review website Angie's List.

Metal roofing materials cost about three times as much as asphalt. But Hicks points out, the average life span is 50 years. Asphalt shingles last about 20 years.

One of the biggest misconceptions about metal roofs is noise.

Roofing contractor Michael Burdine says "a metal roof is no more noisy than a traditional roof. Why I say that is because when you have a metal roof, you're going on top of a solid deck. In that solid deck, you have an attic space, insulation, ceiling....if you don't hear rain today you won't hear rain with a metal roof on."

Burdine also says metal roofs don't attract lightning anymore than any other type of roof. And if lightning should hit a metal roof, it disperses the energy throughout the roof, instead of isolating it in one spot, where it can cause a fire.

Angie's List says metal roofs are also environmentally friendly. They can be recycled. Asphalt shingles can't, and about 20,000,000 pounds of them end up in landfills each year.
