A Hilton Head Island man was arrested early Thursday morning in connection with burglaries at two schools on the north end of the island.
Charles Leroy Walley, 45, was arrested on two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of petit larceny.
Deputies responded to Hilton Head High School at about 3:30 a.m. on a report of an activated alarm. They found the building unsecured and no obvious sign of forced entry or theft, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Less than an hour later, another alarm went off at Hilton Head Middle School. Deputies saw Walley inside the building. Walley escaped through a window and was found lying in some bushes outside the school at about 5 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
Several small electronic items from the middle school were recovered from Walley, according to the sheriff's office.
Walley was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
Nothing was stolen during the burglary at the high school nor was there damage to either school, according to the sheriff's office.
