CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters and SCE&G crews have secured a gas leak at the construction site at old Buist Academy Friday morning after workers struck a gas line.
The gas line was struck around 10:30 a.m. at the school located at 103 Calhoun Street, according to Mark Ruppel with the Charleston Fire Department.
Calhoun Steet is still closed between Anson and Meeting Streets to allow for fumes to clear. George Street is also shut down from East Bay to Meeting.
No injuries have been reported from the scene. Charleston police urge motorisits to avoid the area at this time.
A few residents and businesses across the street from Buist Academy were asked to evacuate as a precaution.
Construction crews have been working on Buist Academy to shore up its seismic deficiencies.
