CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The solicitor's office says that a 23-year-old man was sentenced to 6 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a 12-year-old girl on Johns Island.
Authorities say Mijail Surec Garcia pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery on Thursday. According to police, Garcia sexually assaulted the child in July of last year on Johns Island.
U.S. marshals arrested Garcia in Boca Raton, Fla. at a job site last year where he was building and repairing homes. Authorities developed information that Garcia had fled to Florida. Investigators alerted the U.S. Marshal led Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, who set up surveillance in an area where Garcia was believed to be working construction in a developing subdivision.
Florida investigators ultimately observed Garcia working at the job site and placed him into custody without incident. Garcia was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail where he was extradited to South Carolina.
