Thieves steal copper from grocery store roof, cutting power to refrigerators

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Copper thieves hit the West Ashley Food Lion over the weekend, knocking out the store's refrigeration system.

Charleston police were called to the store on Ashley Crossing Drive on Saturday morning. The manager told police officers that sensors that monitor the refrigerators began to sound.

At that time, maintenance workers began checking on roof units and discovered copper feeder pipes had been cut. They believe the burglary happened around 6 a.m.

It is uncertain how the thieves got onto the roof since the only access is inside the store.

The stolen copper is worth about $400, but the loss of refrigeration will likely cost the store thousands in spoiled food.
