Testimony begins today for murder suspect defending himself

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Testimony starts Tuesday in the trial for a murder suspect acting as his own lawyer.

Last month, a judge declared a mistrial in the case of Donsurvi Chisolm after a Dorchester County sheriff's deputy mentioned Chisolm's criminal history during testimony.

Chisolm is charged with the 2007 murder of 20-year-old Craig Canady who was found dead in a ditch near Summerville.

Chisholm is expected to again act as his own lawyer, but this time he will have a public defender at his side.

He is also facing charges in Dorchester County where deputies say he shot and killed his 14-year-old nephew, Michael Chisolm, and wounded the teen's father who is Donsurvi Chisolm's brother.

That shooting happened in April 2010 in the Sedgefield neighborhood of Berkeley County.
