SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Sullivan's Island is another step closer to having an earthquake safe elementary school.
On Monday night, the town council passed a second reading of the ordinance to lease property to the Charleston County School District to build the new school. The vote passed 6 to 1.
Several community meetings are planned to allow people who live on the island to review the design and give feedback directly to the school district.
The final reading is set to happen at the next council meeting.
Sullivan's Island Elementary School and four other schools in the Charleston County District were closed after engineers found they could not withstand a major earthquake.
