GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities say a 21-year-old man who was locked up a day after two teenage girls and two men tried to kill him was released from jail.

Dustin Mehaffey was released on bond on Thursday night. Berkeley County sheriff's deputies had charged Mehaffey with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, obtaining signature or property under false pretenses and receiving stolen goods valued at $2,000 to $10,000.

Authorities also arrested two teenage girls and two men and charged them with attempting to kill Mehaffey in Goose Creek earlier this week.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office charged 17-year-old Kelsey Rhae Mixon-Riles, 17-year-old Leanne Dolloff, 19-year-old Michael Brandon Whetsell and 20-year-old Andrew David Sartin with attempted murder.

Deputies say the incident started Monday night when investigators responded to a shooting and found Mehaffey lying in the grass in front of Devon Forest Elementary. Mehaffey was suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg and a laceration on his lip.

According to the Mehaffey, Mixon-Riles picked him up at a home on Hawkridge Place earlier that night. Mehaffey said that at one point, while in the car, he became suspicious of Mixon-Riles and believed he was being "set up."

Mehaffey told authorities that the car then stopped in the area of the Kingdom Hall on St. James Avenue. An incident report states that Dolloff approached the car, opened the truck and let Whetsell out.

Mehaffey said that as he was getting out of the vehicle, Sartin approached him with a pistol. According to investigators, while Mehaffey was outside the vehicle, Sartin shot him once in the leg.

Mehaffey said Whetsell then came from behind and struck him in the mouth with the butt of a shotgun. The victim said as he ran away, he heard two shots from both the pistol and the shotgun.

Deputies responding to the scene recovered an ammo cartridge as well as two pieces of wadding.

Mehaffey was transported to MUSC, but he was later arrested Wednesday night.

The incident is still being investigated by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
