Driver charged after cargo disconnects causing accident

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says they have charged the driver of a dump truck after a wood chipper the vehicle was hauling disconnected and caused an accident that shut down traffic on the Wappoo Bridge Friday afternoon.

The accident happened around 11:50 a.m. when the wood chipper disconnected from the dump truck.

A woman who was driving an Odyssey, tried to avoid the wood chipper and went partially into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a pickup truck.

The driver of the Odyssey and the pickup driver received minor injuries. Both were transported to area hospitals for observation.

The driver of the dump truck was charged with operating an unsafe vehicle.
