Cops arrest man at checkpoint for drug, gun possession

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro authorities arrested a man during a traffic stop off I-95 on early Sunday morning after finding drugs and a handgun inside his truck.

Walterboro Public Safety officers were holding a checkpoint at 63 Sniders Highway and I-95 when 29-year-old Charles Tyrone Phoenix pulled up in his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 just before 3 a.m.

Officers said they could immediately detect the smell of marijuana when Phoenix rolled down his window and upon further inspection, they saw a Ziploc bag on the driver side floorboard containing marijuana.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers said they found two more bags of marijuana, including one bag which Phoenix was storing by his groin.  Officers also said they found cocaine, crack cocaine, hydrocodone pills, and a handgun.

Phoenix was taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.  He is charged with possession with intent to distribute schedule III narcotics, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
