Spirit of South Carolina returns after summer away

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The tall ship Spirit of South Carolina is returning home after a summer away conducting educational programs.

The ship left Charleston in May and returns on Wednesday.

During the summer, the ship took part in the 21st Century Spirit Ocean Adventure in which 21 Charleston students explored the Chesapeake Bay and Washington as part of an enrichment and dropout prevention program.

The Spirit was also part of the Seas of Peace program in which 15 teens from Palestine, Israel, and the United States joined the ship for leadership training and to talk about the conflict in the Middle East.

The $4 million Spirit of South Carolina was built in Charleston and launched four years ago.
