Cops: Dance floor bump led to fatal shooting

ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. (AP) - Investigators say an Elloree man who bumped into another man on the dance floor was killed after several shots were fired outside a Calhoun County nightclub.

Authorities told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that 23-year-old Dominique Lawton died Monday, a day after he was wounded.

Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers says Lawton bumped into 25-year-old David Benjamin at the club, and Benjamin and another man were kicked out after arguing.

When the club closed 30 minutes later, investigators say Benjamin and the other man were waiting for Lawton. They began arguing, and shots broke out.

Summers says Benjamin is charged with attempted murder, but that charge will likely be upgraded.

Benjamin's lawyer says the investigation into the shooting isn't finished and more information could come to light.
