NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Homeless veterans will be able to stay put on the old Navy base for at least a few more years.
South Carolina State Rep. Wendell Gilliard says he and State Sen. Robert Ford have worked out a compromise that will keep the vets in their current location for at least three more years.
A transitional housing facility for veterans was set to relocate because new property owners on the old base were going to raise the rent.
South Carolina Public Railways now owns that property. The program for veterans is run by Chesapeake Health Education.
Since 1998, the program has helped over 2,000 veterans get back on their feet.
About 28 vets live at the facility at a time, and Towles said the new building will be able to accommodate the same amount.
