Police searching for arsonist who torched truck

Police are on the lookout for the person responsible for setting a fire in the back of a truck at a home in Walterboro.

On Friday, Walterboro Public Safety officers responded to a home on Forest Hills Road in reference to a vehicle on fire.

The victim told police that he had put out a fire that was located in the truck bed of his 1997 Dodge Dakota. Officers saw that the truck bed and rear of the truck suffered damage and detected a strong odor of gasoline around the area of the truck.

Investigators say someone had wrapped a stick with a cloth material and attempted to set the truck on fire by placing the stick near the tailgate.

Authorities also found that the driver side window was down and that the inside of the truck was soaked with gasoline.

Officers also found an empty yellow antifreeze can on the driver's seat. Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 554 - 4411.
