Driver charged after van hits CARTA bus on East Bay Street

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A wreck involving a CARTA bus snarled traffic on upper East Bay Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the accident happened around 3 p.m. when a motorist in a van ran a red light and t-boned the bus as it was making a left turn onto East Bay Street from Columbus Street.

Francis said EMS responders took 11 people to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was charged with disregarding a traffic signal.
