BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) - Officials are trying to determine why more than 20 crows have been found dead near the Bluffton public school complex.
Officials were testing the bodies for West Nile virus and other diseases. Results should be ready next week.
Beaufort County school spokesman Jim Foster says a Bluffton Elementary School student stepped on a dying crow on Wednesday and the bird picked the student on the elbow. Foster says the student was not seriously hurt and was treated by the family's doctor.
Officials say more than 20 dead crows were found at the school Thursday.
Local veterinarian Ben Parker says the birds might have become intoxicated by eating too many fermented berries and then flown into windows or been hit by cars.
