SC welfare workers suspended after toddler death

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's child welfare agency says some Marlboro County employees have been suspended following the death of a 3-year-old from suspected abuse.

The Morning News of Florence reported Saturday that the Department of Social Services is investigating what happened inside the Marlboro County office. Social services department spokeswoman Marilyn Matheus would not say how many employees were suspended pending the investigation's outcome.

Police charged a Bennettsville mother and her boyfriend following the death of little Edna Hunt.

Police say 25-year-old Atelia Hunt took her daughter to Marlboro Park Hospital last week for an apparent heart attack. Police say the child had been abused for some time and had bruises on her body and burns on her private areas.

Police also charged 29-year-old Mike Huckabee Jr.
