CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The president of an Episcopal Church disciplinary committee investigating a South Carolina bishop says the panel is dealing with a sensitive situation.
Bishop Dorsey Henderson doesn't know when the committee will finish its work but wants the group to be prayerful and not let emotions govern the process.
The committee is looking into whether Bishop Mark Lawrence of the Diocese of South Carolina has abandoned the church based on information from parishioners within the diocese.
Henderson says those names won't be released unless the disciplinary board finds there is evidence Lawrence has abandoned the church.
Lawrence has said repeatedly that he wants the diocese to remain in the church. A number of conservative congregations have left the national church, in part because of policies permitting ordination of gay bishops.
