BROWNSTONE TOWNSHIP, MI (WDIV/WXYZ/WXIN/CNN) - A Michigan dad is in hot water after he was caught letting his 9-year-old daughter drive him to the gas station while he was claiming to be drunk.
"Nine years old. Nine," said Shawn Weimer, 39, in security footage obtained by the Brownstone Police Department. "I'm drunk… I got a designated driver."
Footage shows a red van shakily stopping at a gas station before Weimer and his 9-year-old daughter get out of the car. The child was sitting on a booster seat to drive comfortably.
Weimer bought his daughter a caramel apple before the two got back on the road. A concerned customer called 911 and followed the pair.
"She's driving pretty good," the customer said during the call. "I'm telling you, I can't believe it."
His daughter told police that Weimer had been drinking whiskey all day. He refused a breathalyzer test after they were pulled over and told police he was just teaching his daughter how to drive.
Weimer is being charged with child abuse for the incident, but he would not comment on the case. Friends say that he is a good dad who had weekend visitation rights with the 9-year-old.
"Now he can't see her," said Jill Thiel, a friend of Weimer's. "That's going to destroy him."
He told a reporter for WXYZ that he is a good dad who made a bad decision. He has been busted before after crashing while driving under the influence.
