Troopers: 1 injured in downtown car crash

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that occurred Wednesday evening on King Street in downtown Charleston.

According to troopers, 37-year-old Reginald Eldell was driving a 2011 Lincoln west on King Street when he crossed the center line of the road and crashed into another car traveling east. Troopers say Eldell also struck a utility pole.

Eldell was trapped in the car and authorities had to use the jaws of life to cut him out of the vehicle. He was transported to MUSC and his condition is unknown at this time.

The other driver was not injured in this accident. Investigators say Eldell has been charged with reckless driving.

Charleston police say they had earlier initiated a traffic stop on Eldell's vehicle but the driver took off. Authorities say they did not chase the vehicle.

Eldell then later wrecked on the King Street extension.
