Mt. Pleasant woman to be honored at White House

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Mount Pleasant woman is being honored as 1 of the nation's Champions of Change.

Rebecca Ufkes visits the White House on Thursday to receive the honor. She is president of UEC, a small business in Hanahan that makes a power system for the Marines.

The Ground Renewable Expeditionary Energy Networks System is called GREENS for short.

It's a 300-watt power system integrating solar panels and batteries to provide DC power for everything from laptops and tent lights to tactical radios. Ufkes was named the South Carolina Small Business Person of the Year last year for her work with UEC.

The White House says Champions of Change honors those who innovate, educate and build better than the rest of the world.
