Midlands man prepares 40,000-light Christmas display

LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - A Lexington man is already getting ready to decorate his yard for Christmas. Actually he's been planning it all year, because putting up the lights is the easy part.
He's not quite Beethoven, but Jerry Hite is something of a composer. "It's an obsession, but it beats other types of obsessions," he said.
On what some spend a weekend on, Jerry's given a year. He says he'll have spent 300 hours planning, building and installing, enough time to get funny looks from friends. "They call me crazy, but at the same time, they can't wait to see the show," said Hite. "I've been loving lights since I was a kid so I figured as an adult, why not do it bigger the better."
A year ago, his was easily the brightest on the block, but not quite bright enough. Jerry says he only had about 5,800 lights up, nowhere close to this year's total. "I have approximately 40,000 lights this year," said Hite.
Hite hopes his beacon of light will attract more than curious drivers -- he'll be collecting donations for the Make-A-Wish foundation. "Outside of having fun and giving people something to enjoy during the holidays, it's pretty much become my #1 goal to raise as much money as possible for the MAW foundation," he said.
Unlike the lights, he can't turn off the obsession. "I was gonna do it either way, so it's no big deal," said Hite.
