Public gets a chance to see Charleston Light

SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The public gets a chance this weekend to see the last major lighthouse built in the United States.

The Fort Sumter National Monument holds an open house Sunday at Charleston Light, also known as the Sullivans Island lighthouse. The event takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at 1815 I'On Avenue.

The light was commissioned back in 1962, as a replacement for the original Charleston Harbor light on Morris Island. The lighthouse was transferred to the National Park Service in 2008.

Visitors will not be able to climb to the top of the light for safety reasons. But the lower sections, the grounds, quarters and boat house are open to the public.
