EDGEFIELD, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 26-year-old woman charged with marijuana possession committed suicide in her cell at the Edgefield County jail.
Edgefield County deputy coroner David Burnett says Ashley Williams of North Augusta died from asphyxia due to hanging. A toxicology report is pending.
Burnett says Williams used a sheet to hang herself.
Williams was pronounced dead at a local hospital Friday afternoon.
Court records show Williams was arrested Sept. 30 for possession of marijuana.
WRDW-TV reports that her boyfriend says Williams was arrested Thursday for violating bond terms on the marijuana charge, and she may not have had her medication with her in jail.
