DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston man was killed late Sunday night after his truck flipped over on a drag strip in Dorchester County, pinning him inside.
The accident happened around 10 p.m. at the Dorchester Drag Strip near Ridgeville, off Highway 78. The race came to a stop while paramedics rushed to help the driver, 40-year-old Barry Wright of North Charleston.
According to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, a White Mustang driven by a Summerville woman was racing a pickup truck driven by Wright. The driver of the Mustang was riding in the left lane and the pickup truck was racing in the right lane.
The female driver of the Mustang and several other witnesses told deputies that the back of the Mustang "got loose" causing the car to spin. The Mustang then clipped the pickup truck, causing both cars to hit the guard rail.
Deputies say that after hitting the guard rail, the pickup truck flipped over a retaining wall and hit a light pole. Dorchester County coroner Chris Nisbet says Wright was pinned inside the truck after the truck flipped.
The coroner says Wright died of positional asphyxia. The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident, but say no charges will be filed.
