WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The driver of a car that drove underneath an 18-wheeler on Savannah Highway in West Ashley was airlifted to the hospital Thursday morning.
The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 17 and Main Road just before 9:30 a.m. Southbound lanes were shut down for several hours, but have since reopened.
According to Lt. Jack Scarborough with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office Traffic Division, the truck was making a left turn when the car drove into the back of the truck.
Scarborough said it appears the driver of the car didn't see the truck making a turn. The driver of the car was airlifted to the MUSC Trauma Center.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is currently handling the investigation.
