The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation after finding the body of an Alabama woman on the train tracks Thursday morning in Ravenel.
Investigators found the body of 27-year-old Brandy Kahamistos two miles south of Highway 162 and Highway 17 around 9:45 a.m. According to investigators, Kahamistos and another person "hopped" a train and while they were riding, Kahamistos fell from the train and was struck by it.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office lists the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the body due to falling off the train.
The other rider continued on the train until it stopped in Georgia where he told railroad officials about the incident, authorities say.
"This tragic incident underscores the importance of staying off of railroad property and equipment," said Major Jim Brady with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. "Persons found to be on railroad property can be arrested and charged with trespassing.
The victim's identity has not been released. The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation.
