CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police officers arrested a man Wednesday after they chased him down on foot and found him in possession of a stolen handgun.
Police arrested 22-year-old Jermaine Antwan Haynes and charged him with unlawful carrying of a handgun and possession of a stolen handgun.
Officers were on patrol around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Hazelwood Drive in reference to citizen complaints of narcotics and firearms violations in the area.
As officers approached four subjects loitering in the road, one of the individuals, later identified as Haynes, separated from the group. According to police, he reached into his pants pocket, and then as officers asked him to stop, he ran.
Officers pursued Haynes, who was seen removing a small silver and black handgun from his pants pocket, which he then threw as he ran. Haynes ran about 10 more feet into the next yard before falling to the ground. He was taken into custody.
Officer recovered the gun, which contained seven rounds of ammunition in the magazine and an additional round in the chamber.
The gun was reported stolen to the Easley Police Department.
Haynes was charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun and possession of a stolen handgun.
