HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) - A 43-year-old Florida assistant police chief will be stepping into the role of Hanahan's new police chief later this month.

Michael Cochran is expected to start the new job Nov. 28. Cochran is currently the assistant chief for the police department in Lauderhill, Fla.

The Hanahan Police Department has been looking for a new chief since Donald Wilcox retired on July 15. Wilcox started with the department in 1987.

Cochran, who worked as a patrol officer in Hanahan 20 years ago, said he was driving down the Florida turnpike when he got a Google alert about the job opening.

According to the Lauderhill Police Department, Cochran is a 20 year law enforcement veteran who has been with the Lauderhill Police Department since October 1994.
