Traffic is moving again on Highway 17 after a construction worker was hit by car, shutting down the road early Monday morning. Police say the worker was hit by a car around 3:30 a.m. in Mt. Pleasant and the driver has been charged with felony DUI.
The accident has been cleared and traffic is back to normal after a portion of Highway 17 south was still shut down near Publix at Park West.
According to Mt. Pleasant police, a vehicle being driven by Daniel D. Hamrick entered the construction area around 3:30 a.m. where workers were paving one of the lanes. Police say Hamrick struck one of the workers, forcing him into the asphalt spreading machinery.
Hamrick was arrested at the scene and charged with felony DUI. The victim was transported to MUSC with life threatening injuries.
Hamrick has been arrested before for driving under the influence, fraudulent checks and driving under suspension.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department Accident Reconstruction team responded and is investigating this collision. No additional information is available for release at this time.
