NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A convenience store employee was arrested Tuesday after police say she stole $950 from the cash drawer and swapped it out with $950 in fake currency.

North Charleston police responded to a Montague Avenue convenience store early Tuesday morning in reference to counterfeit currency.

The store manager told police that on Monday the store's clerk, 27-year-old Lashawn Monique Backman, stole $950 from the cash register at the end of her shift and replaced it with counterfeit money.

The manager found the fake currency the next morning and called police. The fake money was in $50 and $100 bills. The bills all had the same serial number.

Backman was placed under arrest.
