MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mt. Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails says that police will be ramping up patrols along Highway 17 where construction work is prevalent following a recent rash of wrecks involving drugs and alcohol.
The mayor says that while police have done an excellent job thus far with the patrolling, more must be done to ensure the safety of county construction workers.
He said that they'll be increasing patrols, particularly between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m., immediately. Swails cited six wrecks on Highway 17 in which drugs or alcohol were involved.
Earlier this week, a construction worker was hit by a DUI suspect. He is being treated at MUSC, where he was listed in "critical condition" on Tuesday.
