Fugitive on the run for 17 years nabbed at Waffle House

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say they have located a woman who has been on the run for 17 years.

The Charleston division of the U.S. Marshals says investigators arrested 52-year-old Sara Jean Rusher late Friday morning at a Waffle House in Augusta, Ga.

Charleston authorities have been looking for Rusher since 1995 after authorities say she went on the lam with her fugitive escapee husband, David Lee Rusher who escaped from a prison in Estill, SC in February of 1995.

On Thursday, investigators located the corpse of an individual named "James Gerald Amon" inside a trailer in Augusta. U.S. Marshals say a woman that called herself "Joan Piper Duncan" told authorities that her husband had passed after contracting emphysema.

An autopsy was performed and the corpse was determined to be David Lee Rusher. The U.S. Marshals then attempted to locate "Duncan" who officials at that point believed the woman to be Rusher.

U.S. Marshals then located the woman at an Augusta Waffle House Friday morning.

Investigators say Rusher eventually admitted to her identity.
