Bill would declare pizza a veggie

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Ask any kid if he or she thinks pizza is a vegetable. The answer would likely be "no."

But if a new federal spending bill passes as is, the government would consider pizza a vegetable – as long as it has 2 tablespoons of tomato paste on it.

The $182 billion legislation Congress unveiled earlier this week would not include money to implement healthier school lunch standards recommended by the Department of Agriculture.

The USDA has been pushing for more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and less sodium, saturated fat and starchy potatoes.

The debate was reminiscent of when the Ronald Reagan Administration tried to classify ketchup as a vegetable. The House and Senate are expected to vote on the bill this week, then send it to President Barack Obama.
