The College of Charleston is one of seven men's basketball teams who have been secured for the 2012 DIRECTV Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant set to be held on Nov. 15, 16 & 18, 2012, at TD Arena.
The eight-team tournament field also includes Baylor (Big 12), Boston College (ACC), Colorado (Pac-12), Dayton (Atlantic 10), St. John's (BIG EAST) and Southern Illinois (Missouri Valley). The final team will be announced at a later date.
The Cougars are one of five teams in the field to advance to postseason play in 2011 making a run to the quarterfinals of last year's Postseason NIT. They last played in the home-hosted event going 2-1 in tournament play against SIU Edwardsville, Temple and TCU in 2008. CofC is only allowed by NCAA rules to play in the same exempt tournament once every four years.
The 2012 Charleston Classic will feature 12 games over the course of the three days of the tournament. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated will face off in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 20.
The Southern Conference will serve as the event's sponsoring conference for the fifth-straight year. Previous tournament champions include Georgetown (2010), Miami (2009) and Clemson (2008).
The Charleston Classic is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN.
