CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - A grandmother and her boyfriend have each been sentenced to 35 years in prison in the death of the woman's 17-month-old grandson.

Julia Shawnette Gorman and her boyfriend, Robert Andrew Palmer, were sentenced in Conway on Friday after both were found guilty of homicide by child abuse, aiding and abetting a crime and unlawful conduct toward a child.

Investigators say Richard Aydian Grimes was staying with Gorman and Palmer at their Galivants Ferry home in July 2008 while his parents were out of town.

Judge Larry Hyman said the boy's skull was fractured like an eggshell. Authorities said Gorman injured the child, and Palmer failed to tell police.

Gorman cried during Friday's hearing. Palmer told the judge he was innocent.
