Officials: Man ejected from truck during wreck in Colleton Co.

COLLETON COUNTY (WCSC) - A man was taken to the hospital early Monday morning after being ejected from his pickup truck in a wreck on Cottageville Highway.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue officials say the incident happened just before 1 a.m., near Bedon Road.  Responders said the truck left the eastbound lanes of the roadway, sped down a 15-foot embankment and struck the opposite ditch bank.

Officials said the force of the impact, caused the truck to be thrown out of the deep ditch and to come to rest on its side near the woods.

The truck caught fire following the crash, authorities say.

A passing motorist stopped to render aid and used a cooler of water to extinguish the fire, according to officials.  Firefighters said the man was found near the vehicle suffering multiple traumatic injuries including injuries to the head.

He was treated at the scene and then transported to Colleton Medical Center.  Because no medical helicopters could fly due to fog, the victim was stabilized at CMC and then taken to the Trauma Center at MUSC.

His condition is unknown at this time.
