CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC/AP) - Rep. Chip Limehouse says that the Charleston Legislative Delegation voted Monday evening to support the Savannah Maritime Commission's opposition to DHEC issuing permits to dredge the Savannah River.
"We feel like many environmental concerns may have been overlooked with the hasty issuance of this DHEC permit," Limehouse said."It is our hope that we can slow this down so that South Carolina's precious natural resources can be safeguarded."
This comes on the heels of the Savannah River Maritime Commission saying South Carolina's environmental agency improperly approved a permit for the dredging of the Savannah River.
The group voted on Nov. 14 to declare the Department of Health and Environmental Control's decision invalid with no effect of law.
Earlier this month, DHEC's board voted to approve a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deepen the Savannah River to allow bigger ships to come through to the Savannah port.
